On the Cutting Edge With Kettlebells in Nashua
The Nashua Telegraph had a feature article this morning on the benefits of training with kettlebells, especially with women. This is nothing new to those of you who have been training with me.. I've been promoting this for a while now and opened the only kettlebell gym in the region right here in Nashua, NH. For those of you who haven't been to Dynamic Strength and Conditioning in downtown Nashua, now is the time to get the best functional training available out there. We have kettlebell specific training sessions every day. We even have an intense 30 minute kettlebell workout at lunch that will get you in and out with a great workout and a shower and still have time to eat before getting back to your job.

Well Kevin, I am happy to report that I took up your challenge to "look at things differently" in order to seek out an awesome workout ever since I read your stair routine at Mines Falls. This weekend I was moving into my condo at Mad River Glen ski area, so I had a good hike in mind all week long. But Saturday morning it was wet and rainy to my dismay. When my black lab Targhee looked sadly at me around 10 AM like " your not gonna let a little rain stop our hike are you", I put on my gore-tex pants, packed some supplies and off we went.
In early October, I competed in the Stark Mountain Hill Climb, which is a running race from the base area to summit, any route, fastest time. I did a respectable 42 minutes, and with the help of DynamicSC, I am going to blow that away next year. Anyway, I wanted to take the same route again to try to scout for a better way up. Of course, I was laboring after about 10 minutes as I followed Lower Glade to Upper Glade, both are steep expert trails which parallel the single chair. I decided to start using the bear crawl to see if I could ease my pain, and to my surprise, I was a bit easier and faster than simple hiking (I think it was because I lowered my center of gravity..). I can’t say it was any great addition to the workout because I was already maxed-out, but I did find it easier, and I am considering how to use this to help my time next year.
After I reached the summit and had a few snacks, I started down and by now a little chilly from being wet and not really working too hard on the downhill. This is where I had the brilliant idea of bear crawling down the mountain. I picked the steepest trails which tended to have mostly grass as I found it was very easy to slip and slide on the wet rocks. Well let’s just say the next 45 minutes was one of the most fun workouts I have ever had.
The trail was so steep, I had to start my crawl sideways, and then turn downhill to crawl. Instead of having to drag yourself along, you had to prevent yourself from flying downhill face first. I always tried to get 25 strokes per arm before resting, which was about 30-35 seconds before my arms and shoulders were burning.
My feet weren’t so much for crawling as they were trying to dig in to stop me from going too fast. After a while, I would alternate by simply drag my toes like in a power wheel format, which really worked my core. In order to stop, I would have to whip my legs around the front of me, into a slide, and use my heels to stop.
I wish I had a video to share… Pouring rain, pockets of snow, alone at my favorite place in the world, smelling the wet earth, getting down (literally), getting dirty, working out.
If anyone were to see me, I kept wondering what I would say because surely they would have thought something was terribly wrong, or I was injured badly. I would have simply said, “Just looking at things differently, that’s all...”
Thanks Kevin & Michele,
George
Awesome post George! If anybody had saw you doing that they would have thought a couple things.. First, "that guy is nuts!" and second, "he must be in great shape because that's got to be really difficult...". I hope I get to try the Mad River Bear Crawl with you sometime soon.. Glad Michele and I could inspire you to get creative and have some fun with your workouts. See you at the gym..
